Lens Impression
During the wartime, in order to prevent tuberculosis infection during the
transportation of troops, the military promoted mass screening of tuberculosis
by X-ray indirect imaging with both the army and the navy. However, it
is said that the number of infected people including ordinary people did
not decrease so much. In addition, the extreme shortage of supplies after
the end of the war invoked malnutrition of the people, and the disease
condition of TB got worse accordingly. The Occupation Forces General Headquarters
(GHQ) was also necessary for the safety of domestic USA soldiers , they
promoted countermeasures against infectious diseases, including tuberculosis,
so actively provide guidance and assistance, and strong public health measures
It was advanced. In March1947 they decided to revise the Notification Regulations
of TB, mandate notification of all diseases of tuberculosis, and in 1948
they decided to legislate vaccination including BCG.
In this trend, from before World War II , the X-ray indirect shooting method
to efficiently diagnose tuberculosis examination had been keenly researched
and developed, and cameras and lenses for those pictures were produced
by many company. Before the war, lenses used for X-ray indirect photography
began with lenses such as Carl Zeiss's Sonar 5cm f1.5 imported from Germany,
but it became soon be in short supply. Government hurried to make domestic
production of high-speed lens of f 1.5 class, ordered major manufactures
such as Nikon, Canon and Konishroku and emerging companies such as Kajiro
Optics and Nippon Koken, and many excellent lenses had been manufactured.
High-speed lenses developed at this time such as (Regno) Nikkor 5 cmf 2,
f 1.5, R-Selenar 5 cm f 1.5, Luminon 5 cm f 1.6, X-ray Xebec 5 cm f 1.5,
LumiTER 5 cm f 1.5.
This lens is a special lens manufactured by Zunow Optics Industry (Teikoku
Kogaku) for mounting on the "X-RAY MAMIYA X-30" ordered to Mamiya
Koki after the war. I bought this lens in full set including two X - ray
cameras and film cartridges but not lens only, so I think that it is valuable
historically.
As with other X-ray lenses, this lens does not have diaphragm, but on the
other hand there is something like a helicoid with limited range of motion.
Since it should be fixed at normal usage, it is unknown what kind of usage
of this. The description of this lens in a word, it gives feeling of flare-like
but sharp. When taking photos outdoors with f1.4, a considerable halo appear
around the highlight area, but the core of the subject is expressed firmly
and in detail. I think that it is a characteristic of a roentgen lens which
shoots a very dim fluorescent tube..
